Deviousness |
I've been following your comments on this piece. In an earlier post, you said this piece; ..."when compared to the work of (other artists you respect and admire), makes you aware of your own limitations"...
I've thought a lot about that statement.
I'm a retired professional commercial artist. I was also an art director for 17 years before I retired in 2009. I think I understand what you mean when you said the above about your own work. When I look closely at this piece, I see small imperfections. I see areas where I feel you perhaps gave in to a tendency to rely on technique over pure illustration a bit more than you might have done...
I just don't feel you are giving yourself full credit for what you are accomplishing with a work like this. This is a marvelous piece, Tim. It has incredible depth, while still being able to have an impact on a viewer's sense as a composite image. In some places, the level and sheer intensity of detail seems to border on the self indulgent.
People... young and amateur artists, and pure fans, look up to you, and admire your work for good reason. Do yourself a favor and acknowledge the fact that your work and you, are deserving of that.
No matter how you feel this may or may not compare to the work of others, this is an amazing illustration. You should be damn proud of this. At conventions over the course of the last 30 years, I have had occasion to meet some of the artists you admire and look to as sources of inspiration. I have no doubt that any of them would tell you that this stands on it's own as an exemplary piece of fantasy art.
Happy holidays, my friend.
but if only i could be that good with a brush.
